Save the Leatherback of costa rica

The Pacific Leatherback of Costa Rica need your Support

The leatherback turtle, that marvellous, ancient animal, is being once again endangered by unscrupulous developers. We ask your help to protect this Jurassic animal from the uncontrolled development that will destroy the nesting beaches front for the profit of the developers!

The Minister of Environmental negotiated with owners and they agree to create a buffer zone with the legal figure of a Wildlife Refuge around the National Park so that these non-ecological, millionaire developments do not harm the fragile ecosystem the leatherbacks depend on to survive. A project of law to this effect has been presented, to save the leatherback we need your support to help this law be approved by the Congress of Costa Rica.

Dr. Oscar Arias Sanchez, President of Costa Rica and Nobel Prize in Peace as well as founder of the Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress has presented to the Congress of Costa Rica in conjunction with the Minister of Environment a bill that will create a National Wildlife Refuge around the National Park Las Baulas. This refuge will create a strip of 150 metres that are to be under strict regulations to stop and prevent anyone from harming the Leatherback’s territory. Any landowner that disagrees with the creation of this Refuge will be expropriated in order to ensure the full protection of the National Park.

It is the first time the government has introduced a measure that is foremost to protect this endangered species and that small landowners as well as environmentally-conscious landowners can agree with. Your help is indispensable to ensure the complete protection of the leatherback’s nesting site and to stop the unconscious profiteers from destroying this indispensible nesting site for the last Leatherbacks of the Eastern Pacific.

Help us to insure and support the protection of the turtles by printing the following petition and sending it by fax at the following numbers:

National Park Las Baulas de guanacaste

Las Baulas National Marine Park (Parque Marino las Baulas) is located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica near the town of Tamarindo. It supports the largest nesting colony of leatherback sea turtles (baulas) on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, with a population size of about 150 female turtles nesting per year. Nesting season is approximately November through April.

Although Playa Tamarindo is not included in the National Park, its 50 meter zone is also protected. This is the case with all coastal areas in Costa Rica. The first 50 meters above median high-tide is considered to be protected public lands.

The National Park is comprised of the 50-meter zone of four beaches (Carbón, Ventanas, Grande and Langosta), as well as the Tamarindo estuary and mangroves at the mouth of the Matapalo River and the San Francisco River Estuary. To the north, the Cerros Morro and Hermosa are also included.
